These include deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna, figure 3 at upper left), borage (Borago officinalis, figure 6 at lower right) and peppers (Capsicum annuum, figure 5 at upper right). Deadly nightshade has been used for centuries to dilate the pupils of the eyes, and preparations have also been used as a sedative. Borage extracts have been used as diuretics and painkillers. Extracts from peppers have been used to treat seasickness and haemorrhoids. This illustration was taken from the Iconographic Encyclopaedia of Science, Literature and Art", published in 1851."
