Prickly pears. Prickly pear cactus (Opuntia sp.) with ripe fruit (orange). Several species of prickly pear produce edible fruit, some of which are palatable enough to be grown as crop species. The fruit and stems are covered in small barbed spines called glochids, which must be wiped carefully from the skin of the fruit before eating.
