Venus fly trap, Dionaea muscipula, a carnivorous plant native to the marshlands of Carolina, USA, showing silhouette of fly trapped in the leaf. The leaves are two-lobed with the midrib functioning as a hinge. In the leaf are three long sensitive hairs, jointed at their bases, which when touched cause the lobes to snap shut. The teeth on the edge of the lobes interlock with each other trapping the creature within. The inner surface of the leaf is studded with glands, which secrete digestive enzymes. The leaf absorbs the products. Dionaea grows in nitrogen deficient soils & must obtain these nutrients from a carnivorous diet.
