Maple tree. Autumnal Maple tree, (Acer sp. ). The rich leaf colours of the fallen leaves are due to the loss of the dominant green chlorophyll pigment, allowing the other pigments to be seen. Deciduous trees shed all their leaves in autumn in preparation for the cold, dark winter. Photographed in Westonbirt Arboretum, Gloucestershire, England.
