Papyrus reeds (Cyperus papyrus). These plants have stout bare stems crowned with offshoots of long thin leaves. They normally grow to a height of between one and three metres. Their pith was used to produce paper by the ancient Egyptians. The papyrus originated in Syria and tropical Africa, and was introduced into Europe in 1803. Photographed in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana.
