Daisy flower head (5th of 5 images). Close-up of the flower head of the ox-eye daisy, Leucanthemum vulgare (or Chrysanthemum leucanthemum). There are two types of tiny flowers, or florets: sterile white ray florets and fertile yellow disc florets. Outer disc florets mature first, exposing pollen- bearing anthers, as at centre right, to insects. The disc florets are arranged in two sets of interlocking spirals, corresponding to the Fibonacci number series. The ox-eye daisy is a medium sized perennial plant which grows in grassy places and flowers between May and September. See photos B539/025-029 for flower opening sequence.
