Terrestrial bromeliad (Puya aequatorialis) growing on the edge of a steep hillside. Bromeliads are often found growing as epiphytes on trees, however some more primitive species, such as this, grow on the ground. This plant has a well developed root system for the uptake of water, and elongated stems with rosettes of leaves at the top. Photographed near Quito in Ecuador.
