Orchid flowers (Spiranthes sinensis). The orchid produces several flowers on an erect stem. Three of the flowers are seen here. Each flower has a specialised petal (the lip, white) that attracts pollinators. This orchid is found in the temperate and tropical regions of Asia and Australasia, from eastern Russia out to the Pacific islands. This specimen is from Japan. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
