Orchid flowers (Phalaenopsis equestris). One of the petals of each flower sticks outwards from the reproductive parts (yellow). This petal, the lip, is a specialised petal that provides pollinators with a landing platform. This orchid is found in the tropical forests of the Philippines and other nearby islands. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
