Orchid flowers (Maxillaria coccinea, also known as Ornithidium coccineum). The yellow-tinged petal (hidden by the still opening sepals) is a specialised structure called the lip. It attracts pollinators to the flower. This orchid is found in the West Indies and parts of South America. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
