Orchid flower (Masdevallia coriacea). The flower has three large sepals (pointed), with an inner ring of small petals surrounding the reproductive parts. Two of the petals are white. The third one is red, and is called the lip. The lip attracts pollinators to the flower, providing them with a place to land. This orchid grows in cold climates, and is found in forests high up in the mountains of Ecuador and Colombia. It can be epiphytic (growing on trees) or lithophytic (growing on rocks). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
