Orchid flower (Lycaste locusta). The flower has a specialised petal called a lip (centre, fringed with white hairs). The lip attracts pollinators to the flower, and provides them with somewhere to land. This orchid is found in mountain forests in Peru. It is a lithophytic orchid (one that grows on rocks). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
