Orchid flowers (Coelogyne viscosa). The yellow and orange petal on each flower is a specialised structure called a lip. It attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is an epiphytic and lithophytic orchid (one that grows on trees or rocks). It is found in tropical and mountainous regions from India to China, and east and south to the Malay peninsula. This specimen is from Laos. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
