Orchid flowers (Coelogyne swanniana). Each flower has a brown-tinged petal. This is a specialised petal called a lip. It attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). The Coelogyne orchids are found in the tropical regions of Asia from India and China, south and east to the Pacific islands. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
