Orchid flowers (Cephalanthera kurdica). One of the petals (white) of each flower (one partially open at lower centre) is a specialised structure called a lip. This attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. The Cephalanthera orchids are terrestrial orchids (ones that grow in the soil). They are found in the temperate regions of Europe, Africa and Asia. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
