Desert flowers. View of a mixed community of blooming Mexican gold poppies (Eschscholtzia mexicana) and a giant saguaro (or sahuaro) cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). The flowers have all bloomed due to heavy rains in the area. Flower displays such as this are infrequent and short-lived. Saguaro cacti are amongst the largest in the world. They can grow up to around 15 metres tall, and may have as many as 50 arms. Like many cacti, the saguaro blooms at night, relying on moths, bats and birds for pollination. Photographed in Organ Pipe National Monument, Arizona, USA.
