Macrophotograph of leaves of the Japanese maidenhair tree, Ginkgo biloba. This is the only representative still existing of the ancient family Ginkgoales. The leaves are unique among trees in that they have no midrib and no network of veins; rather the venation consists of a constantly branching fan from the base of the leaf. The tree produces two kinds of shoots; long shoots and short shoots. These are the lobed leaves of a long shoot. Male and female plants are found, the male produces motile spermatozoids.
