Moss spore capsules. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the capsules (spore cases) of a club moss (Funaria hygrometrica). The capsules are borne on spiralling stalks which curl up in dry conditions and unwind when they are damp. Mosses reproduce by means of spores at certain stages of the life cycle. Spores (brown spheres) are dispersed from the mouth of each capsule, and are flung away from the plant as the numerous rays open. An open-mouthed capsule is seen at centre right, with a closed one above it. Club mosses are common on recently-burned areas and on alkali soils.
