Ulothrix algae. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the filamentous freshwater green algae Ulothrix sp. (family: Ulotrichaceae) found in a water tank. The name Ulothrix translates to shaggy hair". An unbranched filament runs across the image; it is made up of cells which are alternately smooth and then rough with papillae. These filaments are attached to rocks or aquatic vegetation by a single- celled holdfast. Vegetative reproduction may occur when the filaments break into pieces. At centre left are bow-tie shaped algal cells of the genus Tetraedon sp. Magnification: x960 at 6x7cm size."
