Candida albicans. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the fungus Candida albicans, cause of human thrush (candidiasis or moniliasis). This yeast-like fungus is commonly present in the mouth, vagina, and gut, but its numbers are kept down by the presence of bacteria. The numbers of C. albicans may increase due to hormone changes, antibiotic suppression of bacteria, or ill health. C. albicans may become pathogenic, infecting mucous membranes or the skin. Candidiasis is normally treated by the use of antifungal drugs. Magnification: x3750 at 6x4.5cm size.
