This yeast-like fungus is commonly present in the mouth, vagina, and gut, but its numbers are kept down by the presence of bacteria. The numbers of C. albicans may increase due to hormone changes, antibiotic suppression of bacteria, or ill health. C. albicans may become pathogenic, infecting mucous membranes or the skin.
