Here, fruiting bodies are seen among hyphal threads of the fungus mycelium; the fruiting bodies contain masses of spores which are released into the air. Species of Aspergillus are common in household dust, in soil, and on decaying vegetable matter. A. fumigatus can cause a number of disorders in humans including allergy, respiratory infection (aspergillosis) and invasive disease. Fungal balls can form within the lungs, sometimes needing surgical removal. This fungus can also spread to the brain, kidneys, liver and skin.
