False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the fungus Sporothrix schenckii, causative agent of the infection sporotrichosis. Here, fungal threads (orange) of the vegetative mycelium are seen, each thread is called a hypha, with spores (purple) produced from some hyphae. It grows on moss, other plants or bark; infection is contrac- ted through a skin wound; florists and gardeners are especially vulnerable. The wound ulcerates and can infect lymph nodes. In people with low resis- tance, cutaneous sporotrichosis may spread to lungs and joints. The more serious systemic form of this disease requires amphotericin B antifungal drug treatment.
