Enterococcus faecalis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Enterococcus faecalis (previously known as Streptococcus faecalis). This Gram-positive, non-motile, elipsoidal bacterium, usually occurs in short chains (as seen here). E. faecalis is a member of the Enterococci group of streptococci. It exists as part of the normal flora of the human alimentary tract, but may, under certain conditions, cause infections in the urinary tract. It is sometimes found in wounds and ulcerative skin lesions and is considered as a low-grade pathogen in various other disorders. Magnification: x2500 at 6x7cm size, x1250 at 35mm size.
