False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the bacterium Campylobacter jejuni, causative agent of food poisoning in humans. These Gram-negative bacilli bacteria, curved or spiral in shape, have flagellae (whip-like tails) at either pole of the cell giving them a darting mobility. C. jejuni is a recognized and common cause of gastroenteritis in humans, especially in children & young adults. Contaminated poultry, meat and milk are sources of infection. Symptoms start with fever and acute abdominal pain followed by watery and often bloody diarrhoea. Recovery usually occurs spontaneously in a few days. Magnification: x12,000 at 6x7cm size.
