False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the aerobic soil bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens. The picture shows the whip-like tails", or flagellae, with which the bacterium moves through the water layer surrounding soil particles. Its name is derived from its production of a yellow- green, water-soluble pigment which fluoresces under ultraviolet light. The TEM was produced by the shadow technique: the bacterium was coated with a layer of carbon, followed by platinum, to produce a surface replica which is used as the microscope specimen. Magnification: x10,000 at 6x4.5cm size."
