Supercomputer simulation of the atomic structure of a single molecule of Buckminsterfullerene (C60). Carbon atoms appear as grey spheres, with double bonds in red & single bonds in pale yellow. The 5- and 6- membered rings are arranged in the shape of a soccer ball or one of architect Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes. C60 was first postulated by Kroto et al in 1985. Intensive research has revealed a family of fullerenes of various shapes & sizes. Simulation & image: J. Bernholc, Q. -M. Zhang, J. -Y. Yi, C. Brabec, NC State University; T. Palmer, Cray Research, NC Supercomputing Centre, USA.
