High carbon steel. Light micrograph of a thin section of high carbon steel. This sample contains 0.8% carbon by weight alloyed with iron. The metal has a pearlite structure, with alternating layers of ferrite and cementite. High carbon steel is very strong but brittle. It is used for cutting tools, high-strength wires and springs.
