Calcitonin. Polarized light micrograph of crystals of the hormone calcitonin. Calcitonin is produced by the thyroid gland and helps to control the level of calcium in the blood. It slows the rate at which calcium and phosphate are lost from the bones. Insufficient production of calcitonin causes Paget's disease in which bone formation is disrupted and the bones become weakened, thickened and deformed. A synthetic form of calcitonin is used to treat the condition. Magnification: x120 at 6x7cm size.
