Rubisco. Laue diffraction pattern from a crystal of the enzyme Rubisco (ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) from a plant. Rubisco is thought to be the most abundant protein in nature. Found in all plants it fixes carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. This is an X-ray crystallography image, a way to determine the molecular structure of Rubisco by bombarding a crystal sample with X- rays. Laue diffraction uses the whole spectrum of X-radiation to gain the colours seen here. At centre are shorter blue wavelengths; longer (red) wavelengths are at outer edges. Repeated patterns reveal the structure of Rubisco's crystal lattice.
