Burning petrol. Flames from a sample of burning petrol in a crucible. Petrol is composed of light organic liquids which mainly contain hydrogen and carbon. During a complete combustion these combine with oxygen from the air to form carbon dioxide and water. The deep orange colour of the flames suggest that the petrol is burning inefficiently and will leave a sooty residue of carbon.
