Reaction rate demonstration. Both test tubes contain magnesium and hydrochloric acid, which react to give magnesium chloride and bubble of hydrogen gas. The tube at left contains magnesium ribbon while the tube at right contains powder. The powder exposes a far greater surface area to attack by the acid, meaning the reaction proceeds more quickly and vigorously.
