Sodium reacting with ethanol. Bubbles of hydrogen can be seen rising from a fragment of sodium metal in a beaker of ethanol. The reaction can be shown as: 2CH3CH2OH + 2Na -> 2CH3CH2ONa + H2. Phenolphthalein has been added to indicate the alkalinity of the solution caused by the production of sodium ethanoate. The purple colour shows that the solution in the beaker is alkaline.
