Ethanal reaction. Ethanal liquid (CH3CHO, bottom) reacting with phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5) in a test tube. The reaction produces white fumes of hydrogen chloride (HCl). A second reaction is occurring at the mouth of the test tube. Ammonia (NH3, upper centre) on a glass rod is reacting with the HCl to produce white fumes of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl, top left).
