Litmus test. Demonstration of the colour of litmus indicator when added to an acid (left) and an alkali. Litmus is a chemical indicator derived from the lichen Lecanora tartarea. Its characteristic response is to turn red with acids and blue with alkalis. It is usually seen in the form of litmus paper.
