Calcium nanowires. Coloured two-dimensional autocorrelation image of calcium nanowires, based on an atomic force micrograph (AFM). The nanowires (faint diagonal lines) lie 10 nanometres apart on a horizontally-cleaved calcium fluoride crystal. Nanowires could be used for miniature electronics or for growing artificial tissue.
