Production & decay of bottom quarks in the SLD detector at SLAC, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, California. The computer display shows the tracks of particles at the very centre of the SLD. An unseen electron and positron, accelerated to high-energy in SLAC's collider, annihilate at centre and create a Z particle which immediately decays to a bottom quark and antiquark. All these particles live too briefly to be seen, but the quark and antiquark give rise to short-lived B mesons which in their turn produce the sprays of particles to left and right. (See A142/443 for a larger version of this event.)
