Close-up of the ends of photomultiplier tubes forming part of the JADE particle detector at the DESY particle physics laboratory in Hamburg, Germany. The photomultiplier tubes record & amplify tiny flashes of light generated in JADE's apparatus by the passage of electrically charged subatomic particles. JADE is one of four detectors in use at the PETRA electron-positron collider at DESY. The photo was taken in May 1984, when JADE was partially disassembled for an upgrade.
