Antimatter experiment in which antihydrogen may be produced for the first time. Antiprotons travel along the large pipe at centre, part of the Low- Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) accelerator. Protons are fired into the path of the antiprotons through the small pipe running left to right at centre. Collisions result in which some electron-positron pairs are created and carried with the antiprotons along the pipe. On rare occasions, a positron may combine with an antiproton to form an atom of anti-hydrogen for a tiny fraction of a second. This experiment at CERN, the European particle physics lab near Geneva, aims to produce the first atoms of anti-hydrogen in late 1995.
