This scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicted the mucosal surface of the small intestine of a gerbil infested with Giardia sp. protozoa. The intestinal epithelial surface is almost entirely obscured by the attached Giardia trophozoites. The protozoan Giardia causes the diarrheal disease called giardiasis.
