Edward Spencer (b1799) English lawyer who accompanied the balloonist Charles Green on many ascents. On 24 July 1837 a balloon piloted by Green and Spencer rose from Vauxhall Gardens, London. The painter and amateur scientist Robert Cocking ascended with them to test his new parachute. At 5,000 ft (1,524 m) Cocking left the balloon and began his fatal parachute jump. Lithograph 1839.
