Illustration - Vortex. RMS Titanic Sinking. Illustration demonstrates the working of the vortex by drawing a spoon across a trough of water. Suction can be clearly seen, caused by the swirling water and this was the probable cause of the 'Hawke' - 'Oympic' collision and the narrowly averted accident to the Titianic at Southampton. Titanic was built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast Ireland during 1910 - 1911 and later sank on April 15th, 1912 off the coast of New Foundland after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York, USA.
