Tadpoles of the Mexican spadefoot toad, two morphs of the same age, one omnivorous and a larger, carnivorous one. Spea multiplicata. Synonyms include Scaphiopus multiplicatus and Scaphiopus hammondi multiplicata. Tadpoles can be either omnivorous or carnivorous. Omnivorous tadpoles grow and develop relatively slowly compared to the carnivorous morph. Eating fairy shrimp can induce transformation of omnivorous tadpoles to strictly carnivorous ones, and carnivorous tadpoles are commonly cannibalistic.
