Scanning electron micrograph of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, (the wild type; Oregon R). It is chosen as the subject of genetic experiments, particularly on mutation, because it is easy to raise in large numbers & reproduces rapidly. Mutations are induced & the results, including short wings, forked bristles, feet in place of antennae & colour changes to the red- brown compound eyes, are studied. Straight bristles (setae), seen on the base of the thorax & on the resting wings, cover the fly. Bristle mutation (see Z340/231) results in short bristles, which may be curled & forked. Magnification X 220 (at 10x8 inch size).
