Reconstruction of what Darwin's home at 12 Upper Gower Street, London (later 110 Gower Street) would have looked like today if it had not been destroyed in WWII during the Blitz. The photo is a composite of surviving Gower street houses and contemporary references. The site is now occupied by the Biological Sciences Building of University College London. Darwin moved in on the 31st December 1838. His wife Emma moved in when they were married on 29th January 1839. Darwin christened the house \Macaw Cottage\" after the gaudy colours of the walls and furniture. His first son William Erasmus Darwin and daughter Anne Darwin were born here. It was also where he began thinking about his theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin moved from Gower Street to Down House in 1842, where he would spend the rest of his life."
