Fungal skin infection. Artwork of clumps of fungal hyphae (brown), representing an infection of the skin by a fungus. In humans, this is invariably a dermatophyte, and the condition is known as dermatophytosis or tinea, with a more imprecise term being ringworm. Examples are tinea pedis (athlete's foot) and tinea capitis (scalp ringworm). A wide variety of fungi can cause tinea infections. Non-ringworm examples of tinea are tinea nigra and tinea versicolor.
