Geocentric cosmology. Woodcut illustration depicting the Solar System. At the centre is the Earth. Orbiting this, at increasing distances, are the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Beyond this is the realm of the 'fixed stars', further still are a crystalline sphere and the Empyrean world of fire. This illustration was first published in De geographica by Henrius Glareanus, printed at Freiburg in 1539.
