Zeno (c.334 BCE - c.262 BCE), Greek philosopher. Zeno was born in Citium, Cyprus. After a brief time as a merchant, he moved to Athens to study philosophy. Zeno studied under Crates of Thebes, the leading Cynic philosopher. Eventually he started teaching, establishing a school in the colonnade in the Agora of Athens known as the Stoa Poikile, his students became known as the Stoics. The emphasis of Stoicism was goodness and peace of mind. Zeno divided philosophy into Logic, Physics and Ethics. Only fragments of his writings are known, the most influential of which is his work Republic, in imitation of Plato. This engraving first appeared in The History of Philosophy by Thomas Stanley, published in London in 1656.
