Carneades (214 BCE - 129 BCE), Greek philosopher. Carneades was born in Cyrene in northern Africa but moved to Athens at an early age. He studied philosophy with the Stoics, notably Diogenes. He attached himself to the Academy, where he was influential in debating a skeptical viewpoint. He argued that all knowledge is impossible, apart from this knowledge itself. During a trip to Rome he angered the Senate by arguing that justice had no natural basis and existed solely to control populations. This engraving first appeared in The History of Philosophy by Thomas Stanley, published in London in 1656.
