Friedrich Wohler (1800-1882), German chemist. Wohler studied at Heidelberg and then in Stockholm, Sweden. He then worked in Berlin and Kassel, becoming professor in chemistry at the University of Gottingen. Wohler achieved the first synthesis of urea in 1828. He also discovered aluminium (1827) and several other elements. This artwork, by the German lithographer Franz Hanfstaengl (1804-1877), is from the library of the University of Basel, Switzerland.
