Pharmacological laboratory. 17th-century artwork of the laboratory of the Capuchin friars Aignan and Rousseau, who were known as the Capuchins of the Louvre. The Capuchin order of Franciscan monks was established in 1520. One of the remedies they produced was a balm containing opium. This artwork was published in December 1678 in the French magazine 'Mecure gallant' (later 'Mecure de France'). The Latin texts across bottom are two quotes from the Bible.
